Booker T. Washington National Monument
Young Readers Book Club

Hardy, VA - The second meeting of the Young Readers Book Club will take place at Booker T. Washington National Monument on Saturday, July 14, 2007 at 10:00 a.m.

Children ages 8 - 12 will enjoy reading this fictional account of an eleven-year-old slave named Samuel. Samuel lives on the farm until he attempts to run away with a fellow slave. The two travel to different refuges of the Underground Railroad. Samuel uncovers a secret from his own past. This book was the winner of the 2003 Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction. Children can purchase the book at the Eastern National bookstore located in the park visitor center or get it from their local library. The book must be read prior to July 14 so that a lively discussion can take place! Parents should pre-register children for this program by calling the park at (540) 721-2094 by July 1, 2007.

Booker T. Washington National Monument is one of 391 units of the National Park Service, the agency entrusted with the care of our nation’s natural and cultural treasures. The park is located 16 miles northeast of Rocky Mount, VA via VA 122; 25 miles southeast of Roanoke, VA via U.S. 220 and VA 122; and 45 miles southwest of Lynchburg, VA via U.S. 460 and VA 122. The park is open seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission, parking, and all programs are free.
